Why does Helen drug everybody in The Odyssey?

It's just before everyone is about to talk about their experience in Troy and about the "loss" of Odysseus and she pours heartsease into the wine or whatever so no one can feel any pain. I don't understand why she does that? Are we supposed to think her wise or unwise for doing so?
