Are leek roots edible?

I saw a chinese cooking show and I think, (really not too sure) they were using whole leeks, roots and all. They were saying that the roots are where all the flavour is. I have leeks growing in garden and before I go using the whole thing roots and all I thought I had better find out if they really are edible. Thanks
